30th August 2021 Australian Oil Recyclers Association commissions literature review on the use of waste oil in explosives
Noting a rise in the use of waste oil as a bulking agent in mining explosives AORA has commissioned ARUP consulting to undertake a literature review on the following:
Available information on potential health, safety and/or environmental risks associated with used oil use in ANFO blast practices
Potential next steps for further detailed investigation
The report concludes that significant health, safety, environmental and legislative questions are raised by this practice and further investigations are required to better understand.
20th August 2021 NWRIC AORA responds to the fourth independent review of the product stewardship (oil) act
The National Waste and Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC) has commented on the independent review. NWRIC CEO Rose Read describes the scheme as an excellent success story for product stewardship.
“The Scheme has encouraged producers to take responsibility for their waste, has encouraged investment in recycling infrastructure, and created jobs, boosting the economy and importantly, protecting the environment.”
NWRIC largely supports the recommendations of the review but considers the linking of scheme benefits to changes in oil pricing as problematic.
